Thought/vent for the day: Beauty Pageants for children – WTF?!

Posted in Thought/vent of the day on January 25, 2012 by Kris513

It’s been a while since something’s bothered me enough to blog about it, but I’ve recently watched an episode of the TLC series Toddlers & Tiaras for the first time and I have to say that it left me feeling rather disturbed.

I don’t know about you, but I think beauty pageants for children is just so wrong! Stop telling your 5-year-old to smile and shake her bikini-clad ass for a crowd of strangers in order to earn a plastic tiara thing (a lesson in building confidence or a lesson in a warped idea of self-worth?…hmm).

It’s a no-brainer really. Just stop turning your child into a trampy, fake prima donna. Let them play, enjoy life and get dirty like normal children! How about teaching them some valuable life lessons like “use your intelligence and wicked sense of humor to get ahead in life instead of only coasting by on your beauty” (WHICH WILL PROBABLY FADE, I might add).

Also, while you’re at it, how about throwing in a lesson in classiness and the ‘less is more’ principle?

Lights out till next time.

Thought / vent of the day: Ooh! Controversy!

Posted in Opinion Pieces, Thought/vent of the day with tags on September 13, 2011 by Kris513

I would never go out of my way to stir any pots. I think it’s tacky and generally not my style. However, if I feel strongly about an issue, I’m sure as hell not afraid to voice my opinion about it.

You know the saying, ‘If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything’? Well, if you think about it, it’s kinda true. We have to believe in something to be able to wake up every morning. Belief is what motivates us! I mean, what’s the point of having an opinion if you’re too afraid to voice it, right?

Placing ridiculous prices on artistic passion?

Posted in Art, Opinion Pieces with tags , , , on September 11, 2011 by Kris513

Creative Week Cape Town is finally here! This week designers, artists and generally anyone who is remotely interested or involved in the creative industry will be showing their faces at various events happening all over the city. Last night, I attended an event held at the old Bijou Theatre in Observatory, Cape Town. The event was made up of an art exhibition, live bands and an indoor marketplace that seemed to specialise in selling vintage, second-hand clothes. However, one thing that I realised whilst absentmindedly strolling through the exhibition, was that some of the artworks on show seemed so overpriced! – even by general art standards.

*

Artwork by Norman O’Flynn on show at the Bijou Theatre in Observatory. Selling price: R18 000.

*

Now, maybe I’ve been living under a rock without realising it, but I thought we were moving away from the whole ‘putting-a-dot-on-a-page-and-charging-exorbitant-prices-for-it’ vibe. I mean, one of the artists was selling a series of simple, circular, medium size photographs of various foods like macaroni and chocolate fudge for R800…each! I’m sure there was some great introspective mumbo jumbo motivation behind this minimalistic ‘art’ series, but really! Let’s not get crazy.

I’m also aware that ‘expensive’ is a relative term and is interpreted differently depending on an individual’s bank balance, so if the price seems suitable to you then by all means, go for it. I just feel like sometimes the integrity and passion of artwork is lost by putting ridiculous prices on pieces that are clearly not worth that much.

For instance, I like the impact of Norman O’Flynn’s artwork pictured above, but is it really worth that much? Maybe or maybe not…but it sure beats an R800 photo of macaroni.

Lights out till next time.

Hellooo blogosphere! How are you guys doing?!

My tardiness in posting is totally inexcuseable and I hope you guys forgive me (yet again), but I’ve been super busy with work and a new photo-illustration series that I’m VERY excited about. I don’t want to reveal too much, but I will say that it involves taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary (^^,) .

Oh! And the good news is that I’ll be posting a lot more often now that I have a WordPress app on my cellphone. Gonna be doing more Kris513 OTG (on-the-go) posting so you’ll see exactly what’s been keeping me from all of you.

The posting drought is over peeps! Long live WordPress apps!

PS: It feels good to be back.

Lights out till next time.
